Comparison Between Wood And Metal Sheds

Uncover the unique characteristics, advantages, and considerations of each material to make an informed decision for your storage needs

As a consumer, you have the choice of purchasing a pre-built wood shed or a metal shed. While they are both similarly priced, it is our opinion that a wood shed is without a doubt the best solution for your long term investment:

  • Wood sheds are much more attractive. The design and touches of a wood shed make your yard look much nicer than a metal shed.
  • Most metal sheds have only two 4”x4” runners underneath, while our 10’ (and wider) wood sheds have five 4”x4” skids. This makes for a much more structurally sound shed base.
  • Most metal sheds require no (or minimal) hurricane strapping and no stud plates at the top of walls. The framing in our wood sheds are loaded with Simpson straps, rated for 160MPH (or 165MPH in the HVHZ) hurricane coverage, and are braced with DOUBLE plates on top of all stud walls.
  • Metal sheds have thin metal sheets nailed to studs, creating a very flimsy exterior wall that can easily blow apart. Our vinyl siding sheds require plywood sheathing walls underneath them. And, our painted sheds are framed on 16” centers (not 24” centers) with thick T1-11 sheathing attached.
  • Many metal sheds will rust over time, particularly those close to the coastlines.
  • Some customers complain of the noise created by rain hitting metal roofs, particularly at night.
  • It is much easier to re-paint a wood shed than to try and re-paint a metal shed.
  • The bottom line is that wood sheds are:
    • Much more structurally sound shed than metal, will last longer, and will hold up better to the dangerous Florida weather.
    • Nicer in appearance in your yard.
    • Easier to maintain.
